Saxonburg, PA Above-Ground Pool Destroyed by Ice

March 3, 2016/0 Comments/in Case Study, Pool Inspection, Pool Inspector/by Gayle Frank

After a harsh winter, an above-ground pool in Saxonburg, PA suffers irreparable damage.

Above-Ground Pool Inspection in Saxonburg, PA

At Landscaping Inspection Services, we have seen pools that have been neglected by homeowners, and have fallen into states of utter disrepair. However, in many instances, the homeowner does everything right, and the pool in question still becomes damaged. This is often the case when the weather becomes so cole that even pools that have been properly winterized end up freezing.

Landscaping Inspection Services was called out to inspect an above-ground pool that had been damaged, possibly from snow sitting on the pool cover throughout the winter months.

Initial Consultation and Inspection Observations

Our inspector spoke with the homeowner who stated that he had winterized the pool before the weather became freezing. Our inspector made the following observations throughout the course of the inspection:

  • The pool was empty of water.
  • The liner was torn up and partially off its track.
  • The wall of the pool was bent.
  • The skimmer was damaged.

Analysis of Damage

In many cases, our inspector will determine that the homeowner’s story doesn’t quite add up with the damage that is present in the landscaping or spa. However, in this case, our inspector noted that except for the damage that was being inspected, the pool appeared to be in good condition; the homeowner did appear to take good care of the pool, and had properly winterized it before the winter months.

Cause of Loss

Our inspector determined that while the homeowner did properly close the pool for the winter, it was not enough to stand up to the harsh winter, and the pool water froze. The following spring, as the weather warmed up, the frozen pool water began to melt, and subsequently shift. This shifting ice is the cause of the damage sustained to this pool. The shifting ice caused the liner to tear, which in turn caused all the water to drain out through the tear. As the water drained out the pool, it caused the weight of the cover, and any snow or debris on top of the cover, to weigh down the structure of the pool, causing the pool wall to collapse.

Unfortunately, in cases such as this, the entire pool until will need to be replaced.
