St. Louis, MO Pool Inspection Determines Spa Damage Caused by Extreme Winds

June 26, 2015/0 Comments/in Case Study/by Gayle Frank

Landscaping Inspection Services was called out to inspect the damage sustained by an above-ground spa in St. Louis, MO, after the extreme winter months. High winds destroyed the paneling around the spa, as well as the spa cover. In addition, a lightning strike destroyed the electrical equipment to the spa. Our inspector determined that the entire unit needed to be replaced.

Our inspector met with the homeowner who explained that the high winds during the winter months had picked up the neighbor’s trampoline, which landed in the fencing that surrounded the spa, damaging the fencing. The winds also tore the cover off the spa, and ripped the hot tub’s paneling off the frame.

St. Louis, MO Spa Inspection and Observations

An experienced landscaping and spa inspector visited the home and made the following observations:

  • The spa cover had tears and the ties had been ripped off.
  • Severe damage was sustained to the cabinet.
  • There was no visible damage to the hot tub shell.
  • The hot tub did not run and the motor and heater did not function.
  • The hot tub’s “pack” (complete mechanical and electrical system) was old and the service wires were burnt at relays.
  • The electrical system was protected by quick disconnect only.

The hot tub was exposed to 60 inches of snow during the winter. The electronics were non-functional and had long passed the life expectancy of the unit. The hot tub unit had no signs of leakage.

Repair Estimates for St. Louis, MO Spa

Although the hot tub was quite old, the inspector determined that it may have been operational before the storm, and that the damage was caused by the extreme weather conditions. The damage to the electrical system was likely caused by an electrical surge during the storm.

The inspector determined that the entire unit would need replacing as it would cost more to repair the unit than to replace it, and the damaged unit was beyond its normal expectancy.
