Pool Collapse in Grand Junction, CO

September 15, 2016/0 Comments/in Case Study, Pool Inspection, Pool Inspector/by Gayle Frank

After a pool in Grand Junction, CO partially collapsed, Landscaping Inspection Services was called out to inspect the pool and determine the cause of the collapse.

Grand Junction, CO Landscaping Inspection

Landscaping Inspection Services recently inspected a pool in Grand Junction, CO, to determine why the pool had collapsed. Our inspector visited the property in question and spoke with the insured.

The insured explained that she had winterized the pool and lowered the water level to right under the pipes. When the pool was being opened up, the insured noticed that the walls had collapsed. The insured explained that the pool walls had collapsed more and more as time passed.

The insured explained that she believed the pool had been installed about 15 years ago, but she had only lived on the property for a year, and this was her first winter season with the pool.

Observations Made During Pool Inspection

Our inspector performed a thorough inspection of the pool and surrounding areas, and made the following observations:

  • The pool was a fiberglass Doughboy Pool that had been put in-ground (Doughboy Pools can be placed in or above ground).
  • The pool measured 12’x25’x 4’.
  • There was no water in the pool.
  • All of the pool walls had collapsed inward.
  • The wall base was washed out.
  • The concrete surrounding the pool had eroded.

 Analysis of Landscaping Inspection

Our inspector determined that this pool is beyond any repair. The pool needs to be removed, along with the surrounding eroded concrete, before a new pool can be installed.

The erosion of the concrete was indicative of a slow leak that had developed over time. (The origin of the leak was unclear due to the extensive damage of the pool).

Cause of Loss in Grand Junction, CO Landscaping

It was the opinion of our inspector that the pool had developed a slow leak that, over time, eroded the outside of the pool. This caused extensive damage to the concrete and allowed the pool walls to cave in.
